Irish Crochet History

THE HISTORY OF CROCHET IN IRELAND

This beautiful craft was introduced as a famine relief scheme in the mid nineteenth century and within a few years it was being taught all over the country. Women and children became very skilled at their work and supplied markets in Dublin, London, Paris, Rome and New York. Crochet was a way of supplementing the family income and may even have earned a ticket to a new life in the United States of America.

Murphy of Ireland have been selling hand made Irish Crochet since our foundation and we have a beautiful selection of Christening Gowns and Cardigans available directly from Ireland.
